NEAR AND YET SO FAR: BODIES IN PSYCHOANALYSIS
27th IPSO European Meeting
Berlin, 13.10.2023 – 15.10.2023
As Freud highlighted, the ego is fundamentally a bodily ego, and this raises important questions about how the body can be integrated into the psychoanalytic treatment process.
Following Freud’s footsteps, we will reflect on this topic, considering the significance of bodily sensations and physicality in the therapeutic encounter. From the initial encounter, the body’s role in the treatment cannot be ignored, as its physicality and corresponding sensations are encountered through various means such as countertransference, secondary skin phenomena, embodied sensations, embodied setting, and enactments.
The rapid digitization of society raises critical questions about the possibility of psychoanalysis in the online realm, leading to the dissolution of physical bodies in virtual space. Therefore, we will also discuss the ability to oscillate between near and far in the virtual realm, which cultivates vitality, much like the dance or struggle within the analytic encounter.
Join us in the vibrant city of Berlin to explore the complexities of the psychoanalytic encounter and cultivate psychic flexibility. We welcome submissions from practitioners and scholars interested in engaging in this exciting discourse.
