CALL FOR PAPERS AND PROPOSALS

27th IPSO CONGRESS Cartagena, 2023

CONGRESS THEME AND TOPICS

LANDSCAPES OF THE MIND: FROM DESERT TO FIRE

Dear analysts in training,

We want to welcome you to our upcoming 27th IPSO Congress in July 2023. We are organizing and preparing the next Congress in the warm and charming city of Cartagena, Colombia, and we invite you to come aboard this psychoanalytic journey.

We hope to share scientific contributions that will enrich practices and encourage debate. Please read below the characteristics of our theme and topics for this occasion, where we plan on meeting in person. May you be inspired!
The analytic encounter can be metaphorized as a living space of dynamic landscapes between two minds that are constantly changing and evolving. Our congress theme “Landscapes of the Mind: From Desert To Fire’‘ is the starting point of this invitation to reflect on the different panoramas of the analytic situation, and also on the dynamic relationship between internal and external events.

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PROPOSALS

Our congress artwork is inspired by a piece of magnificent Cartagena street art by Yurika MDC, who painted a local black bird known as “Maria Mulata” in Plaza de La Trinidad. The mural is based on a local legend: According to the story, there were once colorful birds called Maria Mulatas which loved to sing in Cartagena. One day a horrific fire broke out and engulfed the city in flames. The colorful birds flew into the fire- ravaged area and with their long beaks scooped up the locals and flew them to safety. Sadly, by flying back and forth through the smoke and soot, the Maria Mulatas lost their colorful feathers and were darkened forever. It is said that on bright days, locals can still see the brilliant colors in the bird’s black plumage.

So, it is from this starting point that we invite you to reflect on our congress’s title “Landscapes of the Mind: From Desert To Fire’‘ and the tremendous tensions and opportunities which underpin our work. As analysts-in-training we navigate precarious terrain with our patients, through flames, soot, smoke and dust. With this in mind, what sceneries of the mind are we currently crossing in these times of uncertainty and international trauma? How has the analytic method and technique been affected? How did analytic training suffer or evolve? What psychic grounds were lived and shared, from desert to fire, from darkness to light? What new or future landscapes arise in the mind’s horizon?

How did the pandemic impact our minds and our analytical work? How did current world social and cultural challenges (such as narcissism, wars, conflicts, health issues) reflect on our psychoanalytic practice? How does this reflect in our psychoanalytic training and learning?

We want to hear your work and ideas on these topics, so we warmly invite you to present and share your papers and proposals in this joint venture among peer candidates. We believe IPSO is part of the pillar of analytic training and count on your active voice.

PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We welcome papers and proposals on any psychoanalytic topic of interest. The paper must be an original work that has not been previously published.

Who can submit a paper?
Only IPSO members can submit papers for this call. If you are not a member yet, you can become one by getting in contact with the Vice-President of your region (see at the end of the document the email addresses) and by paying the IPSO dues.

How to submit a paper
Papers may only be submitted electronically on the IPA website, accessing this link.

Language of the paper
Papers can be submitted in any of the IPA official languages: Spanish, English, French, German as well as Portuguese. Papers should be submitted in the language in which they are intended to be presented. However, we strongly encourage all candidates to present in English, and in the cases in which the paper is not originally in English, please bring an English version to be projected so that all attendees may be able to follow your presentation. If you would like someone to proofread your English version, the IPSO Editors will be glad to facilitate the contact between you and any IPSO member who voluntarily makes himself available.

Paper requirements
Submissions should include a paper or proposal title (no more than 10 words, 100 characters), a summary (no more than 50 words), an abstract (no more than 500 words), and the full paper (no more than 2500 words. This equates to no more than 20 minutes when read aloud i.e., 5 pages single spaced, 10 pages double spaced). If the submission doesn’t follow these rules, the paper will not be reviewed.

Reviewing process
The reviewing process follows the same as a scientific journal review. The reviewing process is double blind, which means that the reviewer doesn’t have access to the author’s name. The author will receive an email informing them about whether or not their paper has been accepted.

Evaluation criteria
Papers will be reviewed based on their originality, contribution to the field, clarity of thought, and relevance to the congress’s theme. This should be held in mind when conceptualizing your paper.

Clinical Confidential Material
Please note there will be non-IPA/IPSO Members at the Congress, most of whom will not be bound by IPSO/IPA’s Code of Ethics (although they may be professional members of other institutions which have a similar ethical code – and, equally, they may just be members of the public, including interested patients of analysts, journalists and authors and will be required to sign a form concerning confidentiality). Under no circumstances should you break the obligation you have to respect your patients’ confidentiality. Any clinical material must be anonymized, and presenters of clinical material must have either obtained the informed consent of the patient (or their guardian) or have taken other carefully considered measures to safeguard confidentiality. If, exceptionally, your application contains sensitive confidential material that prevents its presentation, IPA/IPSO will exercise its right not to present your paper.

Presentation
A paper that is accepted will be presented during the 27th IPSO Congress, Cartagena 2023. It can be allocated to any of the days of the event. The applicant will be notified about the day, hour and room of the presentation, in advance. The presentation should not take longer than 20 minutes, that’s the reason we strongly encourage authors to ensure the paper is a maximum of 2500 words, for the presentation.

IPSO Writing Award
All papers submitted to the 27th IPSO Congress will automatically run for the IPSO Writing Award. We will have the 8th IPSO Writing Award during our Congress in Cartagena, 2023. The two most outstanding papers after evaluation from North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America will win the award. There will be 4 first places (one for each region) and 4 second places (runners-up) one for each region.

The winners of the IPSO Writing Award will present their papers.
The winners will be awarded a certificate of recognition and a cash prize of $400 (four hundred US dollars) for first place and a cash prize of $200 (two hundred US dollars) for second place. The papers of the six winners will be published in the 2023 IPSO e- Journal.
